Are you ready to celebrate 250/150 -- the birthdays of our country AND the anniversary of Colorado statehood?
We'll be decorating our float on July 3 in South Side Park (8th street) from 5 to 7 p.m. We'll have pizza and non-alcoholic beverages. (Park rules.) Come join us!
The county asked that parade floats this year reflect the 250/150 history theme. We've decided to focus our float on Colorado's leading role in the suffrage movement. In 1893, Colorado became the second state to ensure votes for women, and it was the first state to do so by a voter referendum.
(Fun fact: Archuleta County voted against the referendum.)
Beyond reminding people of Colorado's history, we think it's important to focus on women voting in light of things like the SAVE Act and a lot of talk in right-wing circles that the 19th Amendment was a mistake.
If you still have your suffragette sash from our event last year, let us know! We need folks to ride the float and carry the message.
We'll also have a presence at the big 250/150 celebration that day in Yamaguchi Park. Our display in the history tent will focus on National Parks in Colorado -- another opportunity to shine a light on an issue that remains important today.
If you'd like to volunteer to staff a shift at our history display, reach out to Lee Stopher, our volunteer coordinator.
